Maya purchase

Hiya everyone. I plan to be an aspiring zbrush hobbyist here soon. I have zbrush itself already but im kinda ocd about some things and am waiting on some hardware i have on the way before i start to dig into zbrush seriously. My question is this. It seems that many people on the forums use 3dsm/maya to render and do other things after doing the main skulpting in zbrush. What are the main benefits of this? Im currious as i think it would be fun to learn one or the other of these programs as well but at the price they cost i dont wish to buy them unless there is a deffinite reason for it lol. Again, im only a hobbyist right now im not intending to go into game dev or movies or anything like that at the moment. One last thing, ive found this on ebay http://cgi.ebay.com/Autodesk-Maya-Unlimited-2011-WIN-MAC-LINUX-BUNDLE-PAK-/320658606260?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4aa8be08b4
Would this require me to have a student id or anything to use? I cant afford the commercial version of maya/3dsm at all but i could possibly drop about the same as i did for zbrush on it as long as there is nothing wrong with me doing it. I wish to avoid pirating at all costs so im hoping i can use something like what the guy on ebay is selling.
Thanks in advance for any replys and sorry for the large post

I’m not familiar with Maya but I have been using Blender for a couple of years and know it pretty well. My understanding though is that Blender does most everything Maya can do, maybe just not as eloquently. Blender, in and of itself, is capable of creating entire animated movies from the 1st modeling stroke to the final rendering and post production . There have been several movies made using only that program. The thing about Blender that appeals to many that are hobbyist rather than ‘in the business’, myself included, is that it’s a free, open-source program. I use Blender, Zbrush and Gimp and never seem to find things that I can’t get done with that combination. Total cost, the price of Zbrush $700.00.

Hiya, thanks for the reply. I will definitely look into blender. Noticed it can even do hair sims which im kind of excited about. I also forgot about gimp, tried it a long time ago. Will look into them both. TY sir

Another great thing about Blender is there there is a never ending, easy to find, supply of free tutorials on the web.

Good luck.
