Maya and Zbrush

I am a traditional sculptor that has decided to take the plunge and learn Zbrush to expand my marketability in the industry, however when I tried to take a class the school told me I must learn Maya first before going into Zbrush.
I just want to model I don’t want to animate since I am a maquette sculptor.

Is learning Maya a MUST in the industry? I have tried learning 3D programs before with no success and would rather not shell out serious cash on something I may not be able to learn.

Any advice/opinions would be welcome.

Thanks,

J

Not maya, since maya sucks balls for me, but a REAL 3d modeling app is a must, if you never had any eperience in3dmodeling, go for Modo, its the fastest and most intuitive modeling app. You only nned to lern box modeling, and uv maping. But if you want to be really hardcore, you can do everything with zspheres and retopo, but dont do that, you will waste weeks worth of time.

Hi Slocik, thanks for your response. Just to clarify you are saying that as long as I can map and box model a finished sculpt in Zbrush I should be fine?

I have heard that Maya is the industry standard so would there be problems if I learned another program?

And is learning all these other programs absolutely necessary if I only want to design concepts?

Thanks

J

Marketability in the industry.

Don’t want to animate.

What industry, specifically?

School is probably correct in 98 of cases.
Limited information given about industy specific.

Sorry, I wasn’t more clear. The concept design/maquette sculptor jobs are what I am looking at. I know they still have jobs for the traditional sculptors but many of my friends and associates have indicated that there is a move to sculpting in 3 dimensional space as opposed to the traditional hands on approach.

Since the advent of Zbrush many traditional sculptors, who may have been unable to use the usual 3D programs, have been learning a new way to sculpt due to the more “Intuition” based controls.

Till this point I have not heard that anyone had to learn Maya in conjunction with Zbrush.

If you dont want to do animations, or whole big scanes, just single sculpts, then you can go for any 3d app, you really will need only the box modeling skill to do a base mesh with a nice poly distribution. This is a model i did, look at how simple the base mesh it, and under it is a FINISHED IN GAME model with normal maps, that you can put in any engine, done 100% in zbrush with just a little of box modeling knowledge. You dont really need maya for that, that costs a lot of cash, you can do fine with the FREE blender. Buy 1 or 2 tutorials on box modeling, and you ready to go.
