Maya 7.0 loft problem

I am trying to learn how to create surfaces in Maya. Tried understanding how to create birails, but, the help text is particularly lacking in details about how to use that feature. So, I moved on to lofts.
Created two CV curves, same # of points, same curve direction, placed them parallel and flared out the bottom two points away from each other slightly. Then created connecting curves for elevation on the loft surface, making certain to go from the left to the right curves as I created each elevation curve. Once I had it shaped basically how I wanted it, clicked Surfaces>Loft and viewed the result.
???
Where it did not previously exist, there is a line now connecting the far upper right corner to the lowest left-hand corner along the bottom side of the construct.
The attachments show the “before” and “after”. *note: the offending line is highlighted in the withloft.jpg

Anyone got an explanation for why this happened?
