Maya 2010 to zbrush4 and back again workflow, rendering help?

Hello. Quite new to zbrush and loving its features although I have a slight problem with a character I am creating, I have so far followed these steps in creating my character:

  1. Base mesh in Maya.

  2. Imported into Zbrush (with basic planar UV’s).

  3. Subdivided then added details to model.

  4. Poly painted Texture.

  5. Re-created cleaner UV’s with the uvmaster plugin.

  6. Generated – Texture, Displacement and normal maps (2048).

  7. Back into Maya.

Now the problem is getting my model to render .The displacement renders strangely my assumption is that it will render much more clearer in mental ray, no problem with the texture map at all – visible fine. I discovered I can render with software with the mental ray approximation node connected to model although when I try render with mental ray it crashes. Which mean’s I have to close down Maya and re open scene.

Tried manually saving out the texture files and assigning to obj exported model in maya and followed a few tutorials.
Tried the Goz function which automatically brings in the file with everything attached. Still same issue.

I feel it has something to do with the Approximation node as when connected to model it freeze’s and without it renders fine although its not the desired look I want for my model.

I have read a lot about it and watched countless tutorials however unable to find the solution to my problem, putting a hold on to the next stage of rigging the character. Please can anyone help.

Understand there could be a rookie error on my behalf however I’m not sure.
Have you encountered this problem and have a suggestion would much like to hear?

Thanks you.
