hi all sorry if this is a newbie question i have built a model in maya basic model of a spaceship just to pratice on and wondered if i can transfer it to zbrush for scuplting is this possiable if so whats the best way to achive this is there a tut for this hope someone can help cheers
In Maya turn on objExport.mll in window -> settings/preferences -> plugin manager if you haven’t already.
Export your mesh as an OBJ from Maya and import it into Zbrush from the Import tab on the Tool menu. Drop it down in the doc and activate edit. Sculpt away.
thanks for that i got it in zbrush now but when i went to divide it it went from my square type design to a rounded smooth finish what should i do?
Welcome to camtull-clark subdivision! You’ll notice that your mesh is now all quads as well.
Your options for controlling how CC subdivision “rounds out” your meshes are:
1 Add more edges to control the subdivison
2 Turn off SMT when you divide in Zbrush
3 Add creases in Zbrush
When you get the hang of modeling you’ll have a good feel for how subdiv will affect your mesh. Good thing is most apps use subdivision based on the same CC algorithms. You can use “smooth” in Maya or press 3 for a subdiv-preview (Maya 2008) to see how it will subdivide – it will look approx the same in Zbrush on your first sDiv.
thanks for the advice i will have a play later i got 10days off work as i hurt my back.
my next questions are after i have scuplt and played around with it should i paint it in zbrush or export it to photoshop or maya?
as i am learning as i go along as i find this the best way for me im a bit lost about this redering do you do this after the model is finished being painted, sorry if i sound dumb but if you dont ask you never know cheers for the help
