For technical reasons, the largest document size that ZBrush supports is 4096x4096. This is because ZBrush is being powered by a real-time 3D rendering engine, and larger document sizes than that could easily slow performance to unacceptable levels.

There are, however, ways to get very large finished projects (take a look at the dimensions of this one by Shikuri).

One approach is to create your scene as multiple tiles, which can then be combined in Photoshop. Another approach is to create all the major elements in ZBrush and then composite everything together in Photoshop. Either way, you’ll want consistent lighting throughout your scene. For that reason, ZBrush offers inventory controls in the Light palette to save your settings.

I would love to see this addressed in the next version of ZBrush. A built in tiling tool or some sort of addition to the layers pallette.

I’m sure there are a number of creative ways to get around this and still maintain the realtime rendering speed of ZB.

Thanks aurick. If there is a way to turn off realtime render and render the scene later, it will be more easy to make bigger documents. Maybe In Zbrush3 there will be this option. Or something clever.

ZBrush is always rendering the canvas. The Render palette, however, has four different render modes. Best render is what you need to do for your final render, and can calculate advanced shadows, etc. The other three modes are all real time, and each renders different kinds of information from the canvas.

A tiling plugin would be fantastic… after Mandelbulb3d introduced that feature, I wondered why it wasn’t native in Zbrush already.
