Max Poly Per Mesh

Max Poly Per MeshHi,

I hope someone can help me out. I just purchased a new alienware pc with 32 gigs of memory and my max poly per mesh number in zbrush is a little over 21 million. I thought I would get a lot more polys per mesh.

Is this the correct number for my system or should I be getting a higher number? I know I can raise it but this is what the default is set to.

If anyone could help me out I would REALLY appreciate it.

Here are my system specs:

Alienware Aurora_R4
Intel Core i7-4930K CPU @ 3.40 GHz (12 CPUs), 3.40 GHz
32 GB Installed memory (RAM)
64 bit operating system
Windows 7 Professional
AMD Radeon R9 270
1.81 TB Drive
1.59 TB free space
local fixed disk
file system NTFS

Thank you in advance.

ZBrush is still a 32 bit app and as such can only use 4 GB memory maximum on a 64 bit system, so 21 million seems about right. Pixologic will be making available a 64 bit beta version when ZBrush 4R7 comes out. 4R7 is slated to be the last 32 bit version.

Thanks for the help. Appreciate it.

21 million polys is fairly decent. My PC for ZBrush will handle about 18-20 million before starting to slow down a bit. I’ve only got 8GB of RAM but would expect better performance when the ZBrush 4R7 beta 64 bit comes out.

See… that’s what I don’t understand. I have 3x more RAM than you and I only get a couple million more polys per mesh. Even at my max poly mesh limit of 21 million my cpu slows down like crazy. I thought the more memory the more polys. So if I have 64 GB of Ram I would only get a couple more polys? How do some of these artists have such dense meshes, like in the 100 millions of polys? They can’t be all HD geometry.

As said earlier, ZBrush is a 32bit application so it won’t make any difference if you had 4GB available just for ZBrush or 400GB Ram. It can only use a max of 4GB. Having more than 8GB Ram allows ZBrush to use the maximum it can handle while having sufficient ram for any other running applications

You can use multiple subtools so the poly limit is per subtool
