Max and Displacement maps

Hi,

I basically dont have Vray. Is there a methodology or workflow for getting displacement maps from Zbrush to work effectively within Max6? All the tutorials point to Vray.

3DS Max 6 comes with Mental ray, and Metal Ray has a displacement shader. You should give that a try. Personally I had very little luck a while back when I played with it. These days I use Vray and couldn’t be happier. Well, except for the occasional banding problem that has never really been resolved to my satisfaction (I still say it’s a Zbrush problem). Regardless, it’s obvious why Vray is mentioned in conjunction with displacement so often. It just works so darn well at it.

i too would be very curious as how to implement it using Mental Ray in Max 6.

First, assign mental ray as your default renderer, then open the material editor. Expand the rollout titled “mental ray Connection”. Unlock the extended shader titled “Displacement”. Click the button which has now changed to “None” and select one of the three shaders, preferably the one titled “3D displacement”. You can now load your map (they call it extrusion map) and simply play with the shaders settings until you get the effect you want. Also note you can experiment with a few displacement related render settings in the render menu too. open the render menu, select the renderer tab, and look at the bottom where it says Shadows & Displacement.

Nice one Zeddicus and thankyou.

I shall experiment with these.

but does it makes inward displacement also? or does it only do outward displacement?
