Materials on different subtools problem

I’m trying to assign different materials to each subtool in my palette, however several of my subtools seem to be “linked” somehow. For instance, my upper teeth seem to be connected to my tongue. Here’s a breakdown of my subtools-

  1. Head
  2. Upper Teeth
  3. Lower Teeth
  4. Tounge
  5. Eyes

When I attempt to change the mats on my tounge, my upper teeth take on that mat as well. I’ll hide everything, I’ve tried duplicating subtools and trying it again. Also, all of my “upper teeth subtool” except for one single tooth seems to be connected to the tongue. Even though ALL the upper teeth are one single subtool. I’ve included a picture in case your confusion is more than mine (I doubt it). I’m new to Zbrush. Loving it, but damn it gets confusing. What in the world am I doing wrong?

If you search on here you’ll find that question has been answered before, in detail.

Thanks for linking to the ZBrush Docs page, but I’ve already read that. It does not answer my question. Can you explain to me why the same subtool is getting TWO different mats on it? For example, if you look at the upper teeth of my model, ONE tooth has a completely different mat than all the others. They are all one subtool. I don;t just post without reading the Docs page first man. I’m doing EXACTLY what it says, and I just read it again. I did not deviate from what this says-

EDIT: I’ve just realized I cannot paint on my upper teeth subtool. I am on RGB. All my other subtools seem to be reacting correctly. I am able to paint and change the mats properly. This specific tool is the problem.

Materials for 3D models

If you are working with a 3D object such as the Sphere3D or a polymesh, the new material will only be applied if the object is in Edit mode or the Move, Scale or Rotate Gyro is active. The default behaviour for a 3D model in Edit mode is for it to take on the selected material.
To paint particular materials on a 3D object, the materials must be embedded. Embedding the material stops the default behaviour and the model will display the embedded material whichever material is selected in the Material palette. To embed a material you need to:

  1. Make sure the M or MRGB button is on in the Draw palette
  2. Select a suitable base material to work with
  3. Press Color > Fill Object

After doing this, you will be able to paint on the model using other materials. Simply select the material you want to use, make sure that the M or MRGB button is on, and paint.

Maybe it’s masked?

Zbrush will display the currently active material on subtools if they have no polypaint data, or if polypaint display is deactivated. If they have embedded polypaint, and polypaint is active (the paintbrush icon in the subtool slot), then it will instead display whatever material you have painted on it.

RGB mode will only paint color, not material.
