Hello, I am trying to add silverfoil material to certain reflective spots of my project. I tried using the standard method that people use, click the M on top and add it in with standard brush, but it doesn’t work. Nothing changes neither the color or material, in addition when I switch materials the material for the whole figure changes. While troubleshooting even though its not what I need I tried to see if the fill object method of adding material would work, So I had M activated and it only fills the color and doesn’t change the material. I am 100000% certain that the other options are not turned on(A, Mrgb, Rgb, Zadd, Zsub) yet it doesn’t add the material. Furthermore this happens for all materials not just certain ones, any help is appreciated.
Seems like you’re having problems adding multiple materials to a subtool. As I said on r/Zbrush first place to look is AskZbrush How can I apply different materials on the same SubTool?. If that doesn’t work then perhaps there’s something more specific going on that the Zbrush team here can help with. Good luck.
Hi @Bob_Sanders Welcome to ZBrush Central.
In order to paint materials and color or both using a brush like the Standard brush, the subtool will first have to be filled with a base material or color or both using the “FillObject” button in the Color palette (I don’t think Joseph mentions that in the above video). Turn on either “M”(Material only) or “Mrgb”(Material and Color) first, then select which material and/or color you want as a base then click “Color > FillObject”. Now you can select a different color and/or material to paint with on that subtool.
As a sidenote, if for some reason you decided you didn’t like what you painted, you can reset the material and/or color by filling it with the “Flat Color” material in the Standard Materials palette. First turn on either “Mrgb” or “M” depending on what you want then select the “Flat Color” material then click “Color > FillObject”. Now you can select whatever new material and/or color you want.
This is normal with a Tool that has multiple subtools. Unless a subtool has been filled using FillObject, ZBrush will show a live preview of the current selected color/material on all the subtools. This is only a preview and nothing is changed.

Hello @zber2 ty for the advice it might be a solution as I did not fill the object with material first. But as I stated I cannot currently fill object with material, only color. For example I put the M button on and go to color > fill object and it only changes the color https://imgur.com/a/fTHGbtW
That’s easy enough to check if it is indeed only filling with color only. Select another color other than white and with “M” enabled, click “FillObject” button. It should not fill it with the color you selected. Also, the latest version is 2020.1.2. You should update so you are on the same page as the people helping you. It’s probably the first thing that Pixologic Support would suggest anyway.
Ty for response, I tried it with several colors but it always turns it white. Its also not zbrush that is broken its something with this particular project I tried it on other figures in zbrush and those worked perfectly.
Layers turned out to be recording I turned it off and it fixed the problem, thx for the help.
