I’m a complete newbie here so I apologize if this is a question already answered(if so may I ask for directions to it)…
The masking tool in my current project has stopped working. It stopped seemingly out of the blue…when i hold ctrl it simply keeps sculpting. If I have it set to lasso tool it looks like its making a mask but then it just subtract from the area as in it looks like a bevel…did I activate something inadvertently?

It sounds to me like you have changed which brushes are selected for masking.
Try this:
Hold down Control and click on the Brush Pallet on the left.
Select Mask Pen and then try drawing a mask. If Mask Pen is selected and its doing stuff like that something is wrong with it.
Look at the bottom of the Brush Pallet and hit the Reset All Brushes button, that should fix it.
If that fails, restarting ZBrush might be just the thing.
For the Lasso one that sounds like something else, like Clip or something, but doing Reset All Brushes should do the trick.
