Masking Issue,is it a bug?

Hey peoples, Zbrush noob here.
I’m trying to mask out a circle on a polymesh sphere to make the pupil for an eye, but every time I do it the mask appears on the other side of the sphere, essentially making a tunnel right through the sphere. I’ve tried messing with a lot of settings including activating “backface masking”. It’s frustrating as hell, please help!!! I just want a hole on the front face of my sphere, how can I do this?

The backface masking intensity can be adjusted. Alternatively, you could try clearing the unwanted masking on the back of the sphere.

  1. Make sure to hold Ctrl when going through brush modifiers like Auto Masking
  2. Automasking modifiers will only work for the MaskPen option which paints on the model. It doesn't work with other types of masking brushes (MaskLasos, MaskRect, MaskCircle, etc) which are designed to cut right through the screen-space instead.

The simplest solution is to just mask both sides, rotate to a side view and then unmask the back half.

If you plan on doing a lot of masking operations then you could try using ‘Tool: Polygroups: Group Front’ to create polygroups based on the current front view when looking at the eye straight-on. You can then visually isolate the new polygroup by Ctrl+Shift+clicking on it, draw out the mask (it will only mask what is visible), then ctrl+shift+click on the document to unhide the rest of the sphere.

Thanks for the replies, will give these a shot
