Masking help...

Hello,

If covered before, can someone kindly point me in the direction to the thread where this has been covered previously? If not, How can I mask a subtool item without it effecting other areas? I have tried backface option and turning double off but that doesn’t seem to work. I also tried adjusting my brush sizes etc; I made a shirt and wanted to extract using a mask from the shirt to make something else. When I mask it, the mask goes all the way through and when I erase it, it erases all the way through. Advice would be great! Thanks!

Sounds like a good place to use polygroups. Inner and outer. Hide the inner group.

I am having a similar issue. I am making a Shield with an emblem. I am trying to turn the emblem into a poly group. the problem is the the back side of the shield is being masked and when I polygroup it, I get both sides of the shield.

What do you mean by inner and outer? I can’t select one side of a curved surface. Pardon me for sounding dense here… this is the first time I have tried this kind of operation.

any help would be most appreciated.

Thank you for your time!

Doug had it right. The key to all this is making efficient use of Polygrouping, and knowing the visibility shortcuts. From there it’s a simple matter to shift-ctrl click a part of your model to hide or quickly mask it. Real time backface masking is very useful, but in many cases, it’s better to simply get something out of your way.
