Mask to Selection

Hey Folks,

although i test drived zbrush alot in the past im still relatively new to its workflow. So it can be that the answer to this question is obvious but i may not see it. So please forgive me if its the case.

Ok now to the point: Im a shell Modeling fan and i try to create some sort of a hull on top of another object. The Layer Brush is great for that. I masked out an area where i want to have the first plate but now i have a problem: I just cant find a feature to get this area extracted as a separate sub-tool.

So my question is: How can i make a selection out of an area that is masked out? In other words: How can i tell zbrush to hide everything that is masked out so that i get a selection of what i created with the mask before? I can then use this to create the sub tool.

I hope you can help me with this. And i also hope you understood what i want to do.

Thx in advance

“Extract” in the subtool palette will create a new mesh subtool out of the masked area on a mesh.

Alternately, you can just manually draw new topology on a mesh, and create an extract from that (assign thickness value to create shelled 3d extracts). The upside of this, is it makes far better geometry. You can use the lasso or marquee tool to hide/unhide polygons. Grouping Polygons into logical polygroups with the "Polygroups>Group Visible command makes this much easier. Read this: [http://www.pixologic.com/docs/index.php/Hiding_and_Showing_Model_Parts](http://www.pixologic.com/docs/index.php/Hiding_and_Showing_Model_Parts) And finally, going to Visibility>Hide PT which will hide everything unmasked. Invert the masking by going to Masking>Invert or Ctrl-clicking on empty canvas to hide what you just had masked.

hey. many thanks for your fast reply. i will give this a shot in a few moments. sounds pretty useful for me now! thx
