Mask by Subtool

Does anyone know of a way or if it is even possible to mask one subtool based off of another subtool? I have a model that I want to be able to project another subtools shape on it exactly as a mask. From there I want to do a group loop based on this mask.

Any ideas?

you could “grab doc” and use the alpha as a “stencil” to mask with.

Hmm that is interesting. I have often wished for a mask by subtool. I have fiddled with a few different ways. The closest I have come is by using duplicating, Merging the two subtools together, then mask by AO with a really tight setting. Then manually filling in the inside. Still pretty time consuming.

Another idea I had was to make a union Boolean, fill it with polypaint, then project the polypaint, then mask by hue. That didn’t work out so well. Might take some more fiddling.

The stencil thing isn’t bad either… it’s just a shame you can’t seem to convert that to a mask.

We can cross our fingers for the next update I guess!

you can convert the stencil to a mask, kinda. Fill your mesh with black, then bust out the stencil, then fill in that area with white, then mask by intensity

There is similar way to do but by stencil, and use it as a mask in a way. It’s in “Macro” tab, “Create stencil from subtool”
