Make subtools simi-transparent to see other subtools behind them

I’m trying to imitate Pixolater’s method of placing an image on a polymesh plane using spotlight (in part one of his two part motorcycle movies) then masking part of the plane and using extract to create individual parts. In the 1st movie his subtools are semi transparent and you can see the image on the plane subtool that’s behind the subtools. Can anyone clue me in as to how that’s done?

Note: he is not using the image plane method (I realize there is an opacity slider to make the subtools more transparent when using an image plane but you cant mask and extract from an image plane.

The subtool transparency controls are in Transform> Transparency and/or Ghost. Likewise they are located on the right side edge of the vanilla interface viewport GUI. They both have slightly different functionality, applicable in different situations.

Exactly what I needed.
