'make Polymesh 3D' button greyed out..

I’m rather new to Zbrush, and I don’t know how to solve the issue of the greyed out ‘make polymesh3D’ button.
Using Zbrush 4R6 on OSX 10.10.1.
Trying to follow tutorials, and they all simply click it and for some unknown reason its totally greyed out for me. Is there a trick to get this working? It does not seem to matter if ive just created a tool, or imported a new one.
I looked this up online and other people have had a similar issue, and they resolve it by clicking on ‘import’ then hitting cancel, and it suddenly becomes useable. This is not the case for me. It seems to me this may be a bug.

Thank you.

Update to ZB4R6 P2 and see if that fixes it.

Hi Doug, I’m currently using 4R6 P2.

Grayed out or missing, usually implies your object is the wrong type for what you wish to do.
Can you describe further(from the moment ZB opens until you expect that option)?

I think i’m missing a step here, I can use the ‘make polymesh 3D’ button on any of the tools included in Zbrush.

However, I’m doing a tutorial using zspheres, and I get to the stage where im paiting them on and smoothing them with one another and making a basic shape, it wont let me use the ‘make polymesh 3D’ button.

Is it because it needs to be converted in some way first? Sorry if ive missed something here, the tutorial guy just simply finished paiting on zspheres and then used the button effortlessly.

Step missing is to make a skin(Unified or Adaptive) then select it from the tool palette.

Doug is right. They don’t become a proper mesh until made into a skin. Once you make it into Adaptive or Unified skin, you have the Polymesh 3D option.

Press ‘A’ to preview the mesh. The button will then be available.

And just to clarify: making an ‘Adaptive Skin’ or ‘Unified Skin’ makes a polymesh and so there’s no need to use the Make Polymesh 3D button.

Thank you for this, a simple ‘A’ solved my lack of knowledge.
I appreciate your time helping me, problem solved!
