Major problem with Zbrush when moving up subdivisions

With this particular ztool, I’m working at a lower subd, I try to go up to the next one and it says “subdividing to 9 mill polys”. Thing is, the last subd is not even 9 mill, only 8, and I’m not even going to that subd, I’m not even going to the second to last. This happens with any ztool and my system slows down to a crawl. I have a lot of trouble closing Zbrush, I have to restart my tablet service after too. It’s hard to use ZB right now. It doesn’t happen every time but it’s happening often enough that I don’t want to use ZB because it’s too hard to get my system running ok after that.

It’s not my computer, it’s ZB4.7, these are ztools I worked with in ZB4.6.

I have something similar to you or even crash at opening, when working in 4r7 with models done in previous versions.
It’s seems that 4r7 don’t like to much something from earlier versions, but I can not find exactly what.
One solution is to convert to obj import in 4r7 check the topology and fix the geo and then redo the subdivision.

What do you mean fix the geo? My mesh is pretty straightforward.

What are you working on that requires so many levels? The ZModeler brush and 4R7 > Dynamic is really sweet. Please show us a screen grab of your ‘problem’. The whole UI with model and relevant panels open.

There’s nothing special going on that would require me to take a screenshot. I’m simply moving up subdivisions. This model has a normal number of subdivisions, nothing out of the ordinary. It doesn’t just happen with this model though. Also, I’m not even going to a high subd, just moving up makes my system slow down a lot. I’m done with 4.7 for now. I’m going to have to keep using 4.6 as it’s happening too often. It’s completely random, sometimes it goes up without a problem sometimes it just stays there forever. And if it happens to want to save the project automatically after the problem occurs, forget it, I might as well turn off the computer.

I’ll just wait to see if this is sorted out.

Mac or Windows?

Windows 7. I’ll see if maybe I can get a video later.

What hardware are you running?

I noticed this on Mac but not to the extent of crashing Zbrush or bringing my system to a crawl.

Phenom XII Black Edition, 4GB of RAM, 64-bit system. I had to delete that last subd but I still get bad slowdowns. i didn’t get smooth performance on 4.6 either, because of my system, but I could manage working with high subds because I spent little time in them and would not go back to them very often. Hiding most of the mesh and working on the eyelids and areas that needed more detail worked for me. It didn’t just slow down and stay that way.

What do you recommend for a new processor? I’m looking to upgrade to a whole new computer just for Zbrush, I don’t play games on PC at all, so I could put most of the money on RAM and the processor. $1200 is my max.
