Lower subdiv only visible with partial mesh visibility - and the other way around

Hi guys,

I’ve started working in zBrush again after a few years. So far so good, but I’ve run into something that’s annoying the heck out of me:

I started with a low res model to block out the anatomy and add detail to the rest. I think I added about 2 subdivisons, and then suddenly I realize I can only go down one subdiv - so I thought I’d accidentally deleted the lowest subdiv somehow. Shame shame, but I decided to concentrate on the hands for a while. So when I hid the rest of the mesh to work on the hands I realized the mesh was a much lower resolution. So I thought: hooray! I can get it back.

I still have the same two subdiv levels that I had before though, and when I hide part of the mesh and go to the higher subdiv it just does the one step up instead of going to the highest subdiv level that it has when the mesh is not partly hidden.

So basically, it seems like zBrush is showing me 4 different subdivs. 1 and 2 when I have the mesh partially visible, and 3 and 4 (I’m not totally sure how I got that extra subdiv in there) when the whole mesh is visible.

I did try reopening zBrush and reloading the tool, but no luck.

Is this a new zBrush feature, did I click something without realising it, or is this just a bug?

EDIT: Ok, for people searching for this in the future: I had turned on Dynamic Subdivisions (Geometry>Dynamic Subdiv>Dynamic), not exactly knowing what it does. Apparently it turns off when you hide part of the mesh, hence my confusion.

You are using Dynamic Sub, this one is triggered by pressing D, look under your geometry menu. to subdivide your model you need to hit ctrl-D
