Lord of the Rings. UK screening today.

Well, I just got back from seeing it and its true, it doesnt feel like you are in there for three hours.

It is amazing and for once the critics are right. It is fairly true to the first book (and I just read it to make sure). They miss out the Tom Bombadil and Goodberry bit before reaching Bree but to be honest I never thought much of that part of the book anyway.

The Uruk-Hai (maybe not spelled right but you know what I mean) are amazing as is the Balrog and a Cave Troll that attacks in the Mines of Moria. The Nazgul are the stuff of Nightmares as they should be.

The best bit for me is the depiction of Iseldor taking the Ring from Sauron 3000 years before the Fellowship story. I always remember bits of that but the film shows it better.

Advice. Go see it now…wherever you are…skip work if needed.

Let me know if you agree.

Hey Southern, I’m excited too!!!
I bought tickets yesterday to go see it at 10:45 this very night… Woohoo! I can tell you liked it anyway.

Oh. Wow. Wow. Oh wow. I am- impressed. That is putting things lightly. Wow. Oh wow.
BEYOND BELIEF!
One of the best films I’ve ever seen, seriously. The story is great, they stuck nice and close to the book. The effects… the sounds… the characters… the atmosphere! I can’t wait to see it again tomarrow. I love it! Now go see it!

I won’t be able to see it until Sunday. :small_orange_diamond:sigh :small_orange_diamond:

I’m off tomorrow night!! lol And by the looks of the reviews…the night after and the night after…

Well, I have been a fan of these books since my freshman year of high school. I’m also chronically used to being disappointed by much-hyped films; they never deliver.

Until now.

I knew within the first 5 minutes that I was going to be buying this film as soon as it hits DVD. By the end, I was breathless. The battles are amazing (now I’d dying to see what they do with Helm’s Deep!), the casting impeccable, the acting impressive, the scope simply eye-popping. There’s enough eye candy in the film to sate anyone – lavish sets, impressive subtleties, and an overall epic feel to the whole thing. Jackson works wonders with dramatic camera angles that make Middle Earth feel larger than life.

As for the departures from the book, I can’t think of a single one that I didn’t like. In some cases, they added new depth to the story (such as the expanded business between Saruman and Gandalf, or the replacement of Glorfindel by Arwen). In other cases, they allowed more of the story to be packed into the film without adding to screen time (an example was how in the books you only hear about how Orthanc was a beautiful place while in the movie you get to see both the before and after).

So I was obviously very happy with everything. My only disappointment is having to wait another two years to finish the entire story.

Two friends went with me to see it last night. One is a fellow long-standing Tolkein fan. The other has never read the books and knew nothing of the story. The former has been raving with me all morning about it (he’s a coworker). The latter went down to the store today to buy the books.

I think I’ll be seeing it another time or two in the theatres, myself. Correction: I know that I will! And for the record, I’m very envious of our friends here at the forum who live in Middle Earth – er, New Zealand. You know who you are!

I saw it at this area’s first showing,yesterday, at 11:00 a.m.

OK, I’ve been waiting for this movie for about 25 years or so, and I’m gonna start out with what I wasn’t impressed with- Rivendell. I thought it could’ve been a little more glorious, being the home of all those wonderful and intriguing elves. That’s it. EVERYTHING else was AWESOME!

Hobbitton, Mordor, ALL the locations were PERFECT. The casting, PERFECT. My God, the battle scenes, PERFECT. The lighting… you get the idea. This movie brought tears to my eyes so many times, I can’t wait to see it again this weekend. I don’t know how we’re gonna wait another YEAR to see part 2 :frowning:

And then ANOTHER year for part three! :frowning: :frowning:

What an experience! Don’t wait! Like Glen said, take off work if you have to. This is the coolest movie you’re gonna see this year!

I’ve got tickets to see it tomorrow night on the big screen of the IMAX theatre.

I’m looking forward to it even more after reading all of your good reviews!

Jackson also did THE FRIGHTNERS…MEET THE FEEBLES…BRAIN DEAD…others as well.

Brain Dead is the best gore movie done…humour in it is perfect.

His first full length movie…I forget the name…was filmed with a 16mm camera, basically at his home with friends.

Yep…New Zealand here has been getting called Middle Earth quite a lot lately.

The talent in this country in every avenue is outstanding. Although to be recognised New Zealanders…‘Kiwis’ have to move to across the ditch to Aussie, UK or the States.

I have to say, Peter Jackson and crew did a great job. Our visions don’t line up, but overall, a solid film. I am also one that has been waiting for some time (Probably spoiled much of it by staying glued to the project and reading the hype).

There were parts that were brilliant. Jaw dropping. While other parts made me ask “Why?”. And I kept expecting Elron to say “Hello, Mr. Anderson”.

So really, it was up and down for me. My final review is good, but not great. But I will see it again…
