Loosing polypaint when creating new Layer (in Layers panel)

Hello,
I have a mesh, and when I create a new fresh first layer, it is loosing all polypaint colors and turning black.
I did this at SDlevel 4 while having a morph target on SDlevel 1 (just in case that this is affecting anything).
This behaviour is new to me (Zbrush 2019.2)

Thanks

Hello @AlexxCentral

Sorry you’re having some trouble!

I can’t replicate your issue in Zbrush 2020 with the information given. The act of creating a new 3d Layer on a mesh does not remove polypaint under normal circumstances.

Before we get to the 3d Layers, let’s make sure we’re on the same page about how Polypaint works in Zbrush. By default, or if no polypaint is applied or active, Zbrush will display the actively selected color and material on a model. To fill or paint a mesh with polypaint, the subtool must be selected, and either the MRGB or RGB channel must be enabled in order to apply paint (material + color, or color only) to the mesh. Any masking must be cleared.

So, if you for instance filled a subtool with a color/material without one of those channels active, it would display that color/material as you might expect as long as that color and material were the active selection. But as soon as you switched away from those color/material selections, the subtool would display the newly selected color or material–not because the polypaint had been deleted, but because it was never applied. Be certain you have actual polypaint applied to your mesh.

Also, polypaint can be disabled with the Tool > Polypaint > Colorize option or via the paintbrush icon in the subtools entry on the subtool list. Be sure neither of those are getting toggled off.

If all of that is old news and none of it seems relevant, we can move on:

  1. Upgrade to the most recent version of Zbrush–currently 2020. This is only because obsolete versions are not officially supported, and if you have to contact Support for your issue for any reason, you’ll want to be using the most up to date version–not to mention all the new features and fixes.

  2. Put your problem file away. Restart the program, and in a fresh session, select the Demo Soldier tool in Lightbox. Subdivide it sufficiently, and give it some quick polypaint. Create a new 3d Layer for it at the highest level of subdivision, just to make sure you know you can successfully do it.

Assuming you can successfully do it, what is the difference between that tool and your problem mesh? Are there textures applied? Does it have UVs? Is your process the same? Is there a difference in the rendering environment? Are you sure there aren’t any other 3d layers applied at any level of subdivision? Can we get a look at the model in the Zbrush interface to see if we notice any issues?

What further information can you provide?

Hi Spyndel,

thanks, very helpful tips. I will figure it out…
(in this case it is not important to “solve” it. I was wondering, if I maybe have forgotten something of the workflow rules or something could have changed in zBrush2019)

all the best,
alex
