Long time with ZBrush....

I just posted this at a new little ZB forum and felt cheeky for not putting it here.

I feel old tonight.

and I feel like a long time ZBrusher. In fact, I’ve been using it for over a decade now. I started in 1999 in version .95 I think. Back then no-one wanted anything to do with high polygon meshes and you couldn’t really get anything useful back out of ZBrush: at least, you couldn’t do much with it. Look at the difference a decade makes. I’ve met some of the awesome Pixo guys in and met some outstanding artists along the way. I had a little relationship with Mudbox a few years back but it never lit my fire I’m afraid to say. I find the ZBrush interface very easy to navigate and always have. Not everyone agrees with me on that point but ZBrush is not just another piece of software. It’s an artists tool made by an amazing artist and it’s development path is unique.

Here’s an article from a magazine called EFX. This was a 10th Anniversary edition and was released in 2001. Take a look at what Pixologic (Ofer Alon) were saying back then and see how much of it has come true.

Keep in mind that in 2001 we had Corel Painter 6, Electric Image universe, Kai Krause was waving his power tool around and Bryce 4 was huge. Pixels 3D was still around, Painter was in V 6.03, Lightwave was in V6, there was no Maya Mac version yet and Autodesk didn’t own everything else.

ahhh…the memories…

hey glen welcome back, i learned quite a bit from your old tutorials, so thanks.
what is this other zb forum?
your links don’t show up, they don’t let you link to pictures anymore.

i really wish the rendering/fur engine would be updated its not too different than it was so very long ago.
its nice to read that article with Ofer, he doesn’t really do that anymore, he’s becoming a Howard Hughes of 3d, lol, i do love this program so freaking much though!

interesting read glen so he planned to have animation added to zbrush all along, looks like future development will get better with time i hope they update the render engine to be able to use video card for further integration in the render engine… but im surprised my self how far it has come in terms of expansion and integration in the 3d artist pipeline…

Mr. Southern:
First of all let me state that it was a work by you that was part of the
book “Digital Fantasy Painting” by Michael Burns that made me buy Zbrush.
It was at then that I learned about the forum and all the fantastic
and generous people that were members here at that time.
(It was during this period that Aurick was not just a moderator but a referree
and a bouncer:D )
I believe there were just unde 10000 of us and the version was 1.05.

Then, as now, any posting with the name Southern was a cause for hearts
to beat, blood to rush and fingers fly over the keyboard.

The works posted by you contained the techniques to shoot for and learn from

A lot of things have changed since then, not all for the better.

But any post by you is something to cherish and look forward to

I hope you will , in the future, continue to grace us with your presence
and knowledge.

Wish to sincerely thank you for all you have to given to this program and for
the inspiration you have provided for all of us.

I have many faults but amnesia is not one of them.

I would like to extend my thanks for your contributions toward the software and its community.

It was your tutorials which first started me off in the world of zbrush.
so thank you.

(The links aren’t working for me could you check them please)

cheers

Hoping all the links work now

Thanks for the kind words folks.

hehe, I remember you being the first at pulling off stuff in zbrush everyone was trying to figure out how to do properly.

I especially remember integrating eyes in models.

Good to see you posting again <img src=“http://www.zbrushcentral.com/pixo/atn.gif”>
