Local subdivision was removed?

Hi. In previous versions of Zbrush there was a cool feature for local subdivisions.

Here is how it was working:
First you mask something. Then you hold ctrl+shift+left mouse button and release everything at the same time, after that Zbrush was doing a local subdivision. But unless a usual local subdiv this one was consist only from quads. While usual local subdiv was producing triangles…

Here are screenshots showing a difference between them:

Also it work faster…

It was VERY important feature in my hard surface pipe line. I was able to optimize my meshes using this feature.

So I wonder where did this feature go in ZBrush 2019?

Hi @FishMan

The latest version is ZBrush 2020.1.4. Maybe you should upgrade to the latest version first. Upgrades are free to registered users and older versions are not supported. It would be hard for people to troubleshoot your problem if they are using a different version than you.

I don’t have a version that old of the program to check, but my recollection is this was a feature tied to Dynamesh. It had to be a Dynamesh object for this to work. Dynamesh works a bit differently these days than it used to–always use the most up to date version of the program.

Since Dynamesh doesn’t generate export quality topology, it seems like you’d still need to retopologgise anyway, so I wouldnt let a few tris bother me. They’re only temporary. Partial subdivision is a quick and dirty temporary solution to increase resolution in an area, but you’re still either going to decimate or retopologize the mesh into a cleaner, more deliberate topology at some point for most purposes.

If, however, you can’t abide the tris, try locally subdividing with ZRemesher:
