Lion Study

A few months ago, I worked on an anatomical study of big cats. This was a huge learning experience and great practice–my first animal sculpt and first écorché too. I crammed a lot of information into my brain within 2 weeks of researching, reference collecting, and sculpting. It was a fun challenge and I learned a lot. Even looking at it now, I can see where I need to improve! But I will appreciate any critique as well. Lots to learn.
Rendered out of ZBrush and composited in Photoshop.

Special thanks to Google images having various dissections of cat parts (and plenty of lion and big cat references). The following list is of sources and artists that helped me for studying:

  • Handbook of Animal Anatomy for Artists by Wilhelm Ellenberger, Hermann Baum, and Hermann Dittrich
  • Maria Panfilova
  • Jun Huang
