Hi guys, here is another test from Lightwave to Zbrush
Excellent progression! Man I wish I was better at visualizing with box modelling to give myself a better head start…hahaha no pun intended!
I would like to see you take this guy all the way and see where ya go with him.
Have any good tutorials you can recommend on box modelling heads…other than practical guide? I’ve seen a few on the web but most are for max or maya or whatever and I would prefer a more generic one…if there is such an animal.
anyways…great job so far! I think you have gotten the hang of Zbrush pretty quick!!
Thanks aminuts,
I am getting there, slowly but surely. and actually enjoying the journey.
can’t say that I have one tutorial I can point to that is the best for Polymodeling - the approach I use is a combination of tips I have picked up from various tutorials - currently my blocking out software of choice is Lightwave - It’s so much easier to work with patches - in just a few minutes you can have something ready to bring into Zbrush for detailing.
I like the profile… has a lot of character.
Nice work!
I’m looking forward to posting some of my own soon!
Cool thanks Solomon! I try to read them all as well and hope I glean something here and there…of course a computer made in this century will help as I grow impatient with slowness but hopefully in a month that will change!! Then I can try out all the demo’s of LW, Maya etc. and see which one fits what I want to do eventually.
Keep up the good work, zbrush is all about the journey…especially when first learning how it all works…what a great and fun ride it is!
I definitely recommend lightwave - for character building - especially heads - you can’t beat sub patches (especially for artists who appreciate instant visual feedback when editing a model) - Max has something that almost comes close in patch modeling but it seems to have been abandoned by most artists as a viable approach. Most guys stick to Polys and nurbs
sub patches are a cross between subd, nurbs, and polys - and the great thing is that you can extrude/smooth shift the patches - try that in Maya!
the syemtry tool in sub patches works like the symetry in Zbrush - it’s true symetry - point for point, poly for poly
and now Steve Warner’s tutorial has opened up the back and forth workflow of Z and lightwave - Thumbs up to him ( http://www.stevewarner.com/Tutorials/zBrush/zBrushTut.html )
here is an update. working on the texture - added the eyes
nice stuff, work a little on the lighting/material to make it look less like plastic
I kinda agree with mindsculptor there on the mat. You might (and might not:D )
find it better to use the material as a base for colorizing your model…ie choose a mat well…set up the lights how you want them…then layer colors and textures on top of that…careful with intensity so as not to lose what the material brings to the table. I hope that made sense hahaha. oy.
I’d like to see ya add more detail to his head too! a wrinkle or two maybe a vein…whatever floats your boat!
thanks for the pointers guys - it’s still definitely a work in progress.
still playing around with the lighting and the texture mapping - am not at all satisfied with the way it looks now.
I had taken a break from Z - but I am back
a little more detail on this model - still doodling away.
Very nice work.
Insider! I was wondering when you would discover ZBrush! I was going to write, but I don’t yet have the new version (being on mac) and didn’t want to be a pest. Your lightwave 8 book came and it has been very helpful. Thanks!
Solomon, have you tried doing a test render of this model with a displacement map in lightwave?
Looking very good, but I’m not sure about the neck. The back curve is convex where I’d expect it to be concave.
ok ok - like the wise one says - Z I must, Tell yourself you shall, a model a week to make, anything less, is Zinful
well, there is a challenge - but right now, diapers is all I zee
hey man,
ya i agree that lightwave is very good for modeling. but i seems to have problem getting the exact detail from zb.
i gone through the steve warner’s tut many many times. and go through some of the zb to maya tut and some zb to messiah tut, but seems like lightwave is lack of subpixel processing(err… or something like that ) and that is why lw can get very close to zb provided is high poly.
or am I wrong??? I will love to listen to some arguement on my point so because I will love to only stick with lw and zb
ok, I mist admit I have been a Zinner!! shame on me - how does that Stevie Wonder song go?
