Lighting Objects with Materials Illustrated in Photoshop

Hello. Been so long since I have posted anything here. However, I check in often and am always inspired.
In the spirit of sharing, I came up with a little demo on how to “light” your models using “Illustration” techniques done in Photoshop. Alex Alvarez at Gnomon asked if I had anything cool that I could offer as demo for Z-Brush. This one is painfully simple yet pretty powerful. It is a fast way to control the look and material of your object that you are sculpting in ZB by illustrating your material in Photoshop.
The point of this was to come up with a way to get very fast and easy results without the use of a 3-D program and complex lighting set ups to generate your reference material (of course, you can always do that, but this is an alternative). So, on the fly, you can quickly render a ball, then test it out on your model, then adjust it in Photoshop and try it out again, and so on.

Thanks Alex and Danni for getting me involved.

And thanks Pixologic for an amazing and enabling art/design tool!!

well I’m definitely watching this - your dvds were thus far the most informative I’ve seen from Gnomon. Thnx

Hi Neville, thanks a lot for sharing this! Just watched the video: awesome 5 star tip! :+1: :+1: :+1: :+1: :+1: !

Thanks Neville…great stuff!! :+1:

Very useful tips Neville. I’m going to make some materials right now…
Thanks for sharing.
Good luck…

Thank you very much for share this great way to apply materials!, it’s so easy and looks awesome!

Genius, Neville, so glad you pointed that out…control in a familiar format.
Great tutorial, so grateful.

Very cool to see a nice well thought out tutorial on this technique. I’ve found it to be the best way to come up with matcaps. Another cool thing about this is that you can overlay other spherical material renders (or photos you’ve found) to your sphere painting to get some really interesting results. Mix and match materials!

Here’s an example.
