Layers not allowing polypaint

Everything works fine without layers but if I sculpt a geo feature in a layer I can’t polypaint any more unless I create a layer for polypaint - and set it to record. Terrible workflow!

When I am forced to use layers eventually polypaint stops working in some areas of the mesh or on the whole mesh and it also gets these blobby patches where the colour does not apply correctly - like it is masked or the layer is under another layer!

I eventually have to bake all of my layers just to be able to keep polypainting - this means layers is basically a useless feature. Is there a way to separate or discard the polypaint from the shape - or just bake a shape/paint?

Any suggestions as to why polypaint and layers don’t work together?

Currently using zBrush 2022.0.6 but I have had this problem ever since layers were introduced.

and this is always fun too… layer refuses to go into record mode, forcing me to bake.

Here is an example of not being able to paint. Some other issues - the mode of applying color when painting on a layer is completely different to regular painting (which works as expected). I can’t paint lighter colours - but only sometimes. When record is active the look changes and very obvious patches show up, like a mask being applied. When the record is deactivated the look can change again and apply those horrible patches.

And in the layer it says the polypaint is empty.
