Hi All
Could i check if this is a normal issue with layers? I’m getting a discrepancy with the displacement height depending whether the layer is ‘recording’ or not.
Workflow:
Import previously created displacement map onto a layer (via Tools > displacement map)
Adjust the intensity to the desired amount (0.05) and ‘ApplyDispMap’
Fine tune the displacement with the layer slider.
Click on the ‘record’ button to continue working on the layer.
The height then changes despite the layer intesity slider remaining the same.
This is a grab to show what I mean:
Is this normal behavior for a layer ?(I cant remember encountering this when using layers that haven’t got an imported disp map)
I think what may be tripping you up here is the lack of the “mode” button in your process. Remember that if “mode” is not pressed then the displacement is applied as a simple bump effect and will not actually alter the silhouette of the mesh no matter how far you crank up the intensity.
If you switch on the mode button with the current intensity settings, you may see a sudden extreme displacement on the surface. This is because no matter high you turn up the intensity, if “mode” is not pressed it is not actually displacing the mesh. You will have to dial back the intesnity to achieve the desired results. Please note that the displacemnt preview may not 100% accurately predict the eventual results when you “apply disp map” to the mesh.
So you will need to Apply the displacement map with the “Displacement Map> Mode” button active while the layer is in recording mode. Please note that this activates a special render-time displacement preview mode that may confuse further efforts to work with the mesh. Once applied to the mesh, make sure that the displacement map is then deactivated for the mesh and Transform > “Quick 3D Edit” mode is enabled if you want to keep working with the mesh.
