Laptop for Game Art (for use in college): Looking for help on deciding

Hi all, college-bound newbie here

I’m trying to decide on what laptop (for use when not using the desktop “base” station) to buy; I need one that can run ZBrush, Maya, 3ds Max and Photoshop CS4 without any problems.

I’ve been looking and comparing laptops for some time now, and I came to the consensus that this would be the best bang for the buck for me, since I’m not really too crazy about going over the $900 dollar range.

Here’s some quick specs on the real guts of the machine-
Toshiba - Satellite Laptop with Intel® Core™ i7 Processor

  • Intel® Core™ i7-720QM processor
  • Features a 6MB L3 cache and 2.8GHz processor speed.
  • 4GB DDR3 memory
  • 500GB Serial ATA hard drive (5400 rpm)
  • NVIDIA GeForce 310M graphics
I’ve seriously considered upgrading the video card and RAM to 8gb, just to further enhance the laptop… Do you think this is necessary, since my funds are somewhat limited?

Like I said before, I’m new here, and looking to get the best laptop suited for video game art (2d and 3d) available for ~$900

Can anyone help steer me in the right direction, or tell me if this laptop is something I should be considering?

I appreciate the help!

its fine, more than what alot of people have for laptops. don’t bother upgrading it your’ll just be wasting your money. just make sure the OS is 64-bit. its better to get a cheap laptop and a good desktop for when your at home than an high spec, overpriced laptop which just starts to slow down after heavy use and has a slow 5400rpm hard drive.
