Lady Layard Bust - Having terrible trouble trying to replicate the hair.

Hi all. I am in the process of trying to replicate this Bust which can be found in the British Museum.

Hey Bookerman,

Looks nice & clean so far. My best advice with the hair, would be to treat it just as you would any other sculpt, break it down into primary forms. With all the ‘strandiness’ (for lack of a better term from my coffee deprived brain) it can be easy to get lost in the details.

While you have some sculpting done on it, I see 3 primary ‘shapes’ of hair right away on the original that don’t show up on your model at all.

If you get the structure laid in first it should make the rest of the way much less painful.

Anyway, hope that’s somewhat helpful.

Best of luck.

Thanks a lot for the helpful reply

What my idea at first was, Sculpt one side and mirror, and then adjust the other side once I’m happy enough with the main side.
Furthermore, I’m trying to work from bottom to the top to have the effects of layers. The little bun at the end would be done last.
I know exactly what you mean by getting lose in the detail though, it’s a terrible habit of mine
The brushes I’ve been using have been clay, clay tubes, move (of course). Are there any other brushes that would do a good job of giving me better “clump” results?

Anyhoo, that’s getting a bit too ahead of myself, so I will get into structuring it first. Thanks again

Hi dabookerman. I’ve modeled a lot of classical sculpture so far.

This ‘hair’ problem is not easy. This is rather a ‘semi’ organic model. Its more about abstract composition. Lot of topology problems here. There’s a hidden geometry there. So, my advice. After some work, you have to retopo the hair. Carefully! BTW I’m not sure that having separate objects in a real statue is a wise decision. Let see how it goes. :+1:
Oh, british museum has lot of great statues. The best. Feidias, marbles of Parthenon! A great topology adventure! Why did you choose this one?

michalis - I took a few picture of different busts and statues, but I decided on this one because I think it’s a very pretty looking bust. And I think it gave me a lot of challenges to do, mainly hair and the bit of cloth that you see.
I’m not particularly experienced with Zbrush as I would like to be, so I want to do a lot more.
