Another one week portfolio project (and entirely done in zbrush) - this time around the concept was written and so the design sensibilities fell to me. I am a firm believer of first satisfying the contract before implementing any sort of self-expression - and so that is exactly how I went about things here. The contract in question is the text of one of my favourite authors, Raymond E Feist (in fact the one that got me reading fantasy books in the first place when I was a kid). The challenge was to create the entire scene from scratch, while being true to the text in every conceivable way - in doing so create a concept upon which to build further. The scene had to set the tone and feel of the story correctly, so on approach our little protagonist, Pug, wasn’t having such a great day and felt intimidated and scared (having nearly been killed) hence the atmosphere on the way to the cottage - but then it had to swing into a warmth that was comforting when the magician, Kulgan, made his acquaintance all the while smoothing things over.
As previously mentioned, I had to prioritize heavily when approaching this constuction of this scene - and while I am aware that the cottage and surrounds definitely lack a “lived-in” feel and what I can only describe as “grungification”, my goal was to concept in one week and satisfy the contract first, needless to say that each and every item in the scene has a calculated reason for being there. From here on I will take my time and polish this scene as well as animate it.
I am also a big fan of Japanese anime and subsequently decided to utilize a similar shape language that is used in that discipline.
