Kong, A happy ending.

I have been lurking and learning here at ZBC for a while now so its about time time I contribute something!

This simple little joke was inspired by all those celebrity mugshots with their characteristically disheveled appearance, and that expression of shock, disbelief, embarrassment and startled defiance.

Modeled in ZBrush, rendered in Zbrush and C4D and finished in Painter, he started life as a commission for an Ad, but budget restrictions meant that they ended up wanting only Kong’s hand! I had been rather looking forward to doing my version of Kong so I decided have a go, with a view to submitting it for consideration in Expose 6.
I have been fortunate enough to have him included in the book.

cool concept - I think it would look more convincing if you either hang the sign with the numbers on his neck or have him hold a bigger board… now it doesn’t look at all like he’s holding the little thing… I think the bg could be more off-white too. Otherwise great, I really like his expression

I think it’s perfect.
Don’t have a problem with the name plate being small,
I mean it’s Kong right? isn’t he suppose to be rather enormous?
I also think it’s funny that he’s being so gentle with the card,
holding it down with his finger tips. The ‘I’m submitting, but
not happy about it’ expression is classic.

Congrats on the inclusion in expose.
Great job 5* :+1:

Hey cool. haha. Nice sculpting dude. The render looks good to. My 2 cents though… Make the board more scratchy. Add some history to it. Oil marks etc. And the shadow falling on it looks odd. otherwise great piece.

Wish the king didn’t fall in the movie. Ah well.

nice one! nick nolte reference pic? (sorry nick)…

but have you rendered it in ZB ou CD4?
i love realism.
nice job!

LOL

Thanks all!

Intervain, I decided that wanted to have him delicately holding the sign, I could have had a darker background but I kind of like the stark white,

Super Glitcher, Many Thanks!!

BrettSinclair, Thanks, nice idea about the board having a history! I 'll have a play with it!

Pete330, Definitely some Nick Nolte and a bit of Hugh Grant in there somewhere!

Paccini, Thanks! a long story on the rendering I’m afraid, I liked the look of the render in ZBrush, but couldn’t get exactly that same look in C4D, so the final thing is a bit of everything thrown together! ( didn’t I say something about whim and chaos!)

Ashaiad, yes, thats the one!

Great work.

I love the look of it. I don’t think you quite got the expression of shock, disbelief or startled defiance. It could be read as embarrassment. Either way I think you can push it much further expression-wise.

If it were a human the disheveled hair would be enough (i looked up some celebrity mug shots to be sure i wasn’t talking out of my arse).

We’re used to seeing celebrities on screen, fresh out of hair and make up so even with no facial expression their mug shots look pretty jacked up.

Since you are starting with a wild animal I think you have to really push the facial expression further than the average celeb mug shot.

Hope that makes sense.

Hi Poda.

Thanks for your thoughts! I take your point about pushing the expression, it was something I played with in the early versions. But I had trouble getting away from something that looked too ‘cartoony’ for what I had in mind.

For me, of all the characters in the movie, Kong was the one with the most dignity and I wanted to try and reflect that. At the risk of failure, I felt it important to aim for some subtlety!

This is awesome ,I like it a lot , very original and I got to say that your painting skills are superb, congratulations ,keep up the good work!:+1: :+1: :+1: :+1: :+1:

Awesome, love the expression…Nick Nolte haha :+1:
