Rather interesting 20 year retrospective of artist’s work…

Seigenthaler sculpture

Animations too.

Sven

Thank’s for the link, Svengali… i wonder if he know’s what he could do with Zbrush !?

jantim

this is some of the best stuff I’ve seen in a while. REally beautifully clean and simply meshes…and nice subtle texturing. Sensational figurative ceramic stufftoo. Reallytop notch.
It looks like he already uses zbrush on these…look atthe plaque on the wall in this image:

Really awesome stuff…
thanks for the link…very inspiring…

Hello Svengali, jantim, and tiktok!
Flattered to see my name here. Thanks for noticing and for the compliments!
Yes I’ve been recently using zb2 for 3 months now, even though I’ve had it since 1.55
and Maya for 5 years.
but enough about me.

In the spirit of linking to others, here’s some of possible interest:

Also on his site see ‘Origin’, up top. Nice evolution morf sequence.

Patricia Piccinini sculpture.

Mark Ryden paintings, and alot of them. Crazy!

Sorry if you’ve been there done that.

Hi Joe,

for some reason I kinda thought you might hear about the link to your site over here (or are you a lurker at ZBCentral?)

Anyway, your site and your works are very impressive. The animations kinda creeped me out… but in a good way. You might consider sharing a couple of your renders with the other ZBCentral folks if you’ve a mind to.

I got the link to your site over at Metafilter, which means your daily hits gotta be way up.

I’ll take a look at your recommended links, thanks!

Sven

Joseph,

Thank’s for the link’s and for your sculptures…i see that you have restrained yourself to go all “wrinklie” with your meshes !..a lot of Zbrusher’s use its potential for detail just for that alone…i wonder if the use of Zbrush made any difference on the size and the detail of your “base” mesh ?..a lot of users with a lot of knowledge on anatomy seem to prefer working with a simple mesh, and add all the detail in Zbrush !

jantim

GREAT links!!!
didnt knew those artists…
Impressive works…
Thanks!!!

Apparently I need to check the community forum more often.

Another excellent link, Sven!!

Mr. Seigenthaler, I wonder if you draw your characters from what you see around our fair city or mostly from wherever it is your mind wanders.

I love the uniqueness of your work. As sven stated some of the animations are disturbing but in a good way, which I reckon is/was your intent. I am gonna have to rewatch em when less tired so I can apprecitiate the works and the music combos and “see” them better. Very interesting works.

I again agree with sven…if you are so disposed…post a thing or two here…I think as Jantim mentioned it is a great way to show how zb can enhance without taking over.

awesome.

Hello again,
Oops, pardon my slow response, unfortunately I’ve been nonstop recently.
Okay Sven… well yes someone emailed me the link to your post here awhile back.
I do check the ZB Image Gallery when I have a chance, so yep that definitely qualifies me as having lurked-looked-n-learned here.:^)
Once I get out from under this current workpile I’ll take your suggestion and post some recents over on the main.
As for the animations, I should really update that page soon.
Sorry/Glad you felt creepy?

Hi jantim,
If the purpose is to have a lightweight setup for animating, the holy grail, then yes I can now go lower on the base polycount.
I haven’t really made many non-rigged cg works, so like others out there I’ll import export the mesh (in my case Maya). It’s good.
Most of the cg works you saw on the site were made by modeling and bump mapping, not much zbing.
But I’m working on it now.
Essentially I would like to get the level of detail that exists in my sculptural work.
The microcosm world, but not get too baroque with it all.
Talking about detail, do you know the painter Ivan Albright?
He’d spend 10 long years on just one painting.
I think he would have liked to try zbrush maybe.

So in this part of this post I would like to link
to my newest favorite artist, tiktok, yes you rock!
and here
or see 'em all
Bayard, will you put your cg work on your site? please do. Great, really great!

Salut Sebcesoir, glad you appreciated the earlier links, I really admire the story by Roger White.
Maybe in the near future, in such a class like that, the guy chipping marble will be the odd man out.
Or maybe someone knows of such a classroom where students all use zbrush and model from life using paid models?
Hey I’d sign up.

Hi aminuts,
yeah alot of the busts/noggins were inspired from riding the CTA (that’s subway, tube, metro, ect. for all the out of towners).
So I’d ride it everyday to work when I was at the Field Museum. They aren’t precisely anyone person in particular.
Just certain qualities I wanted to capture from people I’d see sometimes everyday.
And some mind wandering too, gotta let the mind wander around.
But be careful about staring at people on the train, they don’t seem to like it too much.
Sometimes when it would be really packed, you know person on person, I’d just stare at the back of someones ear for some upclose detail.
As for the animations, I had an exibit a couple of years ago featuring mainly animations and large prints.
Here’s the link to that show, if you missed it:
2003 Exhibit
…so a few on my site are just snippets from that. There were seven originally, each 5 minutes long,
As for the intent, let’s just call it mind wandering.
As for the show, noone bought any of my mind wanderings. But that’s ok, will work for food.
If you get a chance stop by over there, he’s on Well’s in the River North district, right across from Joe’s Crab Shack.:^)

salut, and a peace sign,
js

No Doubt that you are a fan of grotesque like Massys Quinten
(curiously mirror of this at the national Gallery  )
and surely too Franz Xaver MESSERSCHMIDT
and last Tod Browning with Freaks
What a great thing that you meet Zbrush :sunglasses:
Some master class pieces in perspective :sunglasses:
Pilou
ps Of course your site is :+1: Crazzy figures & Animations indeed :grimacing: :grimacing: :grimacing:
pss Your links rocks

Hey Joe,

Good to see that more and more traditional sculptors hop onto the 3d horse - your work is very interesting, good job.

I quoted the link to this article because, whilst reading this, I had quite a few deja vus… I’m also studying traditional sculpting and I like doing work in 3d software as much as doing it the traditional way. And man, it seems that this ignorance among artists about what is sculpture and what is not happens around the whole world… I certainly heard all the comments and arguments about digital sculpting that he stated in his article not only once. It just seems that many traditional sculptors are offended by digital work, no matter how close digital sculpting comes to traditional sculpting. It’s always sad to hear a “you’re cheating, the computer’s doing all the work for you!” comment by a person who has absolutely no clue about digital sculpting.

But I think that happened to every artist who utilized a new artform to express himself. Gee. Sad.

Been to your site like Joe told us to do!! B E A T I F U L drawings. Lovem all! :+1:

Fantastic…

Yainderidoo

whoa…
Thanks Joe…
and yain…
very cool…didn’t think anybody was looking?
This made my day!!:o…
frenchy: franz xavier messerschmidt is one of my favorite sculptors!

-tiktok

Hey tiktok,
yes you have very nice drawing touch, and the imagination to match it.
Most impressive.
and your fishman too!

Hi Frenchy!
Hey my wife is a frenchy, so the kids are half-frenchy…
alors entre nous je pette pas du feu ces derniers jours, j’ai ete pris par un gros deadline…pas marrant… du tout.
En oubliant tout ca…Merci bien pour tes liens, bien perceptive.
Sorry I can’t spell very well in frenchy.

Massys Quentin, Messerschmidt, Freaks, yes all very great,
but also add Hans Bellmer.
To enter there click the two images at the bottom, one is for drawings, les lolos for sculpture.
(But something tells me you’ve already been there before?) just guessing.
Thanks again for the superbe links, and all of those you post, and for visiting my site, glad you enjoyed it.
Bonne journee Pilou!

Hey Thomas,
Yes it is an interesting subject.
This idea of cheating does seem to surface quite often with those who fail to understand new processes.
Maybe it’s the traditional hands-on tactile approach which they can’t seem to find present in digitally produced work.(?)
With CnC laser technology and rapid prototyping being now standard practice in industry, the cost has lowered, but still not very affordable (yet) for the mainstream.
Wasn’t an SGI workstation running AliasMaya around $50,000 10 years ago?
But I guess alot of people still tend to dismiss things they don’t understand.

So his story really shows the butting of heads between these two old and new disciplines.

You didn’t mention the type of traditional sculpting your studying, but if you work on a laptop, hey, why not take it to class?
Good luck,
js

(But something tells me you’ve already been there before?

…you right  This one is the best about H Bellmer :+1:
His line drawing is very fluid!

About Autostitch
Some tips
When you load many images in the same time within some panoramas possible,
this fantastic automatic prog will give you just the first big one,
and you must “erase” by hand these images from your selection and relaunch the prog
It will found the next pano… etc

Another thing, images must absolutly have some common pixels :
if not you can add artificialy some pixels from one to another one and all will works fine !

Have fun panoramas with this crazzy prog
And Zbrush of course
Pilou
ps I am sure that you have remarked my great outstanding english
