Jesus crucified

Hi all! I decided to do this sculpt as an Easter Project. I may still redo the pedistal, and alter the lighting a bit, but wanted to get what I have so far up for some feedback. It turned out to be a really fun project to work on, I learned a ton doing this one. I decided that I would do this sculpt completely without using symetry. The base meshes were all created in 3ds Max, and brought into Zbrush for sculpting and posing. This was the first time I used the transpose tool, and I have to say it rocks! I usually rig and pose my meshes in max so it was really nice to go about things in a different way this time. After every thing was sculpted, I brought the pieces all back into max at thier highest Sub div level and rendered out a poster sized version of this…I plan on printing it for my wall. I may eventually go back and do the UV’s and do some texturing, but I am quite happy with the marble look too. Anyway, Happy Easter to all! Thanks for taking a look!

…nicely done. Love the general feel of being in a church when viewing this sculpt.

Good job.

great!!! nice render! could you explain a bit how you made that render?
I always have trouble getting details out of my renders in max.

did you use any maps or anything?? what kinda light setup?

Beautiful piece :+1: !

Beautiful job apart of fact that body would never be so straight on cross, they were placing nails in between bones , close to wrist (because the way you have it would not support body weight, rip thru palm and person would fall).
Technically great piece though.

Thanks for all the comments and crits!
nerveink: The render was done in 3dsmax using Mental Ray. I used the ceramic “Pro material” as a base and tweaked it to look a bit less glossy. No maps were used, I haven’t gotten around to doing the UV’s for it yet. The lighting was a skylight with the multiplier set pretty low (.1) and then a main key light (mr area spot using area shadows) in front and slightly off to the right. That was set to .7 and a fill light set on the left slightly behind the model. That was set to .2 with no shadows. That’s basically it for the setup… I brought all the models into max at their highest Sub division levels and used the new “Pro Optimize” modifier to reduce the poly counts while still keeping the details. All together the models were originially 32 million polys, but I optimized them down to 10 million for the render. After I rendered the beauty pass, I rendered an AO pass and comped everything in Photoshop. That’s about it.

Mistli: Thanks for your comments! I decided to go with the nails through the palms because every reference image I could find be it paintings, or real crucifixes depicted it as being nailed through his palms. I agree that it is probably not 100% acurate this way and if he was nail through his palms, he was probably also tied at the wrists with rope, or I guess it is also plauseable that he was nailed through his wrists, but I decided to go with a more traditional depiction through his plams. Thanks for your input! I do value all comments and crits!

Here is another rendering, This one is with a wooden look. Hope you enjoy! I might do a turntable if anyone would be interested.

Lovely work, Sculpting and renders well done

What is your hardware setup?

Great job!!! Nicely done.
To say it stands out would be putting it mildly

Great renders. The only thing I would say is that it doesn’t look like he’s being held up only by the nails. He would hang more, I think.

Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani

looks great!

Nice work, I would however suggest you rework the knees a bit they seem like they are kind of plastered on and not making any real connections to the legs. I think the shoulder bicep area could use some more attention also. I agree that he doesnt look like he is currently hanging from the nails. Otherwise you have a very nice model:+1:
