Really good reel. Bravo. Good Luck with the job hunting ( which I think is not gonna be a problem  )

Nice reel… Amazing models  I’m sure you will secure a good position in 3d modeling for certain :+1: :+1:

Jelmer, Nice work.
I’m embarassed to say… In fact I swear, I’d have a hard time telling the difference between yours and Steven Chen’s work.:o
Seems like he’s left a legacy at VFS.
Great job on the renderings and sculpts.:+1:
I’m sure you’ll land squarely on your feet.
Cheers

Nice, i love the models, but i dont like the way the demo reel was put tugether, but i bet its just me ;]
I dont think you will have any problems with finding a job, great work

Very impressive models! I think you will be able to get a job pretty quickly. As for the demo reel, a bit too long (I think 2 minutes may be the sweet mark), and the character types are too similar. All realistic creature blends, no cartoon proportions type characters, or robots. This may limit you to jobs with this type of style only. So in the future you may want to explore other styles just to show that your a very versatile artist. I doubt you will have trouble finding a job in the long run, yet you have a mark against you. This is very similar to Stephen Chen’s reel. Keep in my mind this is my opinion and it may be wrong.

wow! mudbox features, looks quite good

I love your work! Some great designs as well. J

Aha, been waiting for that chicken thingy to resurface.

Don’t worry about the demo reel, schools really don’t seem to want to change. I seem to remember well over 2000 on my floor years back, and they were all so similar, we spent forever trying to mentally keep everyone straight. It was easier in the end to do it by school, as similarities do exist.

Overall great work with lots of potential.

Hope to see you by the water cooler at some point in the future.

Awesome Reel Jelmer, i really dig your models especialy the first one !
Congratz !

  • Just one question, at the end did you use displacement, bump or normal map for final rendering ?

Now i´m downloading the reel but i know your work and i think it´s amazing

Counting the seconds to see this thread in the top row :+1:

Greetings

very cool work dude my favorite model is the fisrtone. i guess you are going to get a job very fast with this level of detail.

Wow Great!

But, Steven Chen…
Please tell me, why you need the second demo reel?

very good!

Fantatic, original work. You should be very happy.

Will be looking for to see your industry work.

Hah thanks guys!

Cool to see all the steven chen replies. We’re from the same school, he started a bit earlier though. I learned a lot from that guy about drawing and zbrush. We both share an interest for the same sort of creatures which is awesome for me, cause he was of great help with feedback in my earlier terms at VFS

I’ve tried to make a reel with creatures that I loved to make and that was sort of catered to type of studios that would be interested in seeing this. That might explain the reason why there aren’t any robots or cartoony characters in my reel at this point. It shows pretty well what type of creatures models I like and are closest to me. But that’s ofcourse not the only style of work I’ll be willing to do after this. It just describes me better I think

NCollings: thanks! All models are just geo and bump.

thanks for your reply Jelmer!
i have one more question if you do’nt mind, why did you choose this technique, geo+bump ?
What do you think about this technique, lowres mesh then sculpting muscles then retopology then add details in mudbox/zbrush then final render geo+bump map ? or just lowres then sculpt+details in zbrush then final render lowres + displace …

Ncollings. The Bat actually is a digital sculpt. I didn’t have the time to build an appropriate lowres deformable cage for it, but else I would’ve used displacements. The other 2 models are done in this way because I wanted to showcase polygonal modeling skills aswell. Besides that it was the method that was taught us here.
