Jay's Sketchbook (nudity)

Here is a new character I’m working on. I’m guessing I’m going to make him into the Green Lantern. Same body type and the Green Lantern is one of my favorites. This is an exercise for me to learn how to redo topology on a model. Anybody know which is better to use for re-topology polyboost or topogun?

Here is my starting point roughly

Very nice work. The obliques from the side view need more of a curve than a straight line down. The bottom one is very nice. I would just push that detail work cause it is too subtle to clearly see.

Here is an update to my Green Lantern, now with textures. Not sure if my pose is final but I’m just working on texture technique. I don’t have the boots textured, so that’s why they are not present. Rendered in 3DS max. Does anyone know what environments The Green Lantern hangs out in?

The Green Lantern render’s so great. I like the rim green around the pants :+1:

Thanks dude. It’s a self-illumanance map set to fallout. Love your Mantis Man by the way.

Very nice render bladeflush. I am looking forward for the final piece.

If there is anyone out there that is using 3DS max and they starting out with trying to figure out normal maps, remember this, FLIP THE GREEN CHANNEL before you apply the normal map to your model. (invert it in photoshop) For some freaking reason it 3D max ends up flipping the green channel when you apply it. I just figured this out today after using zbrush for 5 months. WOW

great work

Great work. And fast.

One thing I would fix is the wrinkles on his midsection- they look more like cat scratches. most wrinkles are motivated by extension and/or compression… but these look placed on the model as extra detail. Since they show up as three lines and they don’t flow with his form they look unreal to me. The wrinkles coming out of his crotch area are much better- you can see that the lower end of his unitard is pulling up on his tights- these wrinkles make sense and look realistic.

Good luck
Craig

yeah you’re totally right it looks like he has worms under his uniform not wrinkles. I’ll fix it.

Here is another update on The Green Lantern model. I’m playing around with lighting and seeing what looks good. Enjoy!

Really nice work so far. I think the lighting and rendering look very nice. The biggest red flag for me right now is the clothing. I’d like to see you nix all of your current cloth wrinkles, do some research in this area, practice a little on a doodle plane, then take another crack at it on your model. For example, the gloves look too loose and floppy because the wrinkles/folds are too large and deep.

Also, the boots are lacking detail. Try making the top of the boots more interesting, and adding seams in the appropriate places.

great work so far. the renders are looking really nice. i agree with dustin though. the wrinkles make his suit and gloves look too loose. What did you decide to retopo in? i tried topogun once, but i couldnt bring my model in to retopo. polyboost is cool, but way too slow. zbrush is even slower though. what i really like is a small program called 3d coat. the new retopo tools are awesome. id definitely check it out

i agree about the wrinkles, they feel tacked on and unnatural. Study tight clothing that resembles the material your going for and try to mimic that. Your wrinkles are to concentrated and have a odd noise to them. Once you find a mix between both subtle and deep folds it will all read much better. Good work though!

Here are some more lighting changes. I’ve also started on the boot revisions. I’m adding seams and more detail. Anyone have any suggestions on the environment he should be in? I’m thinking cityscape.

Bladeflush,
Really nice interpretation! Well…, he is a DC character, so I would put him in an alleyway, or with a laboratory setting after he has recieved his ring. Just my two cents.
Gary

Alleyway sounds good. A real dirty alley and maybe some guy dead that I just destroyed with my ring that I haven’t designed yet. I’ll get there. Thanks for the input.

I’ve seen a few sculpts on here of hero’s in alley ways and I think it’d be a good idea if you changed it up a bit. I was thinking of having him standing on a tall building, starring down watching over the city, with maybe a storm happening behind him, possibly dark colored clouds (not sure which color) and green lightning. But looks like you’ve already made your decision .

Here are some more lighting changes and details added. I’ve changed the pose a little as well. I think the environment I’m choosing is a concrete ledge of a building with a city in the background, some storm clouds, and maybe some green comets. Too much? maybe. This is becoming an experiment in how to light and render scenes well in 3D Max. Feel free to send write comments.
