Issues With Sculpt Distortion ( Jagged Edges)

Greetings All,

I am new to ZBrush ( 3 weeks in) so this issue I’m experiencing is probably an easy fix but I thought I would ask for advice.

I am playing around with a simple sculpt of a character from Undertale, so far the sculpt has turned out ok I’m trying to familiarize myself with ZBrush but when I try to create the arms and lower body of the character all the tools “Clay Buildup, Inflate and all others” turn out jagged and distorted as seen below on the characters spine and it gets so much worse as I attempt to sculpt: I realize I probably shouldn’t have painted until the sculpt was done  but I was trying to get a feel for how the character would look.

Any advice would be outstanding!

Thanks in Advance !

It looks like a case of stretched polygons.

The best strategy when creating your models is to not subdivide too soon. Take the model as far as you can at a subdivision level before you divide. This means working on the overall shape first and then growing increasingly detailed by stages. If you go too far too soon you can find that you’re trapped – such as a case of having to try to stretch the model out somewhere. The strategy is also the key to getting clean sculpts and crisp details.

All’s not lost. One thing you could do at this point would be to clone the model and then use DynaMesh. This will let you build out the areas where you need to add more volume, while keeping a nicely uniform polygon distribution. Once satisfied with that you can divide and then use Project All to copy details from your original model before you delete it. DynaMesh is a great feature for when you’re doodling with ideas and aren’t quite sure where you want to take it. Once you are happy with your overall shape, you then start the process of divide, refine, divide, detail.
