Is there a way to increase your geometry but not jump up by 1 mil polygons with this subtool?

Noob question here,

I want to increase the poly count of my subtool. Currently at 4ook for this shape and Im not able add the detail I’d like.

When I cmd+D to subdivide my count shoots up to 1.6 mil. Is this because its subdividing each polygon and I’m just stuck with this large jump, or is there a way to increase it by a smaller amount, without going in and adding specific edge loops? I’m worried my total points is going to get bogged down if I always make these kind of jumps, but I don’t think I’m knowledgeable enough to add my own geometry manually. Thanks.

As an added question, I’m not sure I understand the difference between applying a dynamic subdivide versus just subdividing ( I mean the option just below the geometry tab, where you can increase the subdivides in increments). I read with latter you can hold onto your lower subdivisions, but aren’t you doing that with dynamic subdivide as well? So yeah, I don’t get it.

When you subdivide, it increases your polycount by 4x. Subdivisions should be saved for the very last after you’re done dynameshing or zremeshing. You could try using the dynamesh and play with the resolution scale.

Ok, thanks for your answer!
