Is there a Doctor in the house?
Character Options’ Doctor Who action figure range is the second largest licensed toy line in the history of action figures with over 350 figures plus a host of vehicles and playsets.
Since the range began in 2004 I have had creative responsibility for over 300 of the figures, sculpting many of them personally. The history of these figures charts the change in prototyping methodology from ‘practical’ sculpting, in physical media, to digital sculpting.
When we started the range, everything was made with epoxy and thermo-polymer clay and sculpted with toothpicks, now the clay has been replaced by ZBrush and the toothpicks have evolved into Wacom Tablets.
Now that Jodie Whittaker has passed the baton back to David Tennant (that was a hard secret to keep for six months, I can tell you!) it seemed like a good time to share some of my sculpting. Please note that the 4th Doctor’s head is shown on a rough scan of Andrew Teal’s original, hand sculpted bodies from 2005 and 2008 that the 12th Doctor is shown with the hair that the enormously talented Phillip Hosking sculpted, along with the body he created. All other sculptural elements, rendering and hand-painted samples were created by me.
