Is it possible to separate objects after they have been merged.

Because I have a character that has many separate parts so I decided to merge the head and teeth together as one SubTool. I later realized though that I needed to reposition the teeth on the character. With the head and teeth combined as one subtool it is very difficult to do this. Is there a function or tool that allows you to separate parts after they have been merged together. Any help would be much appreciated.

did you check “keep polygroups” before merging? (very useful) To check if you can still use those, Shift+Ctrl click once on the teeth, if everything of the model disappears except the teeth, you kept polygroups. At that point you can delete hidden on the object and end up with the teeth alone and save them. Open the original file again and do it for the other parts too. Aftwards compose them back together as subtools.

If you don’t seem to have polygroups left on the merged head, you could try and I say try because it’ll be a lot of manual and precise work … to mask of the teeth manually, then go to Visibility submenu on the right and select Hide unmasked. In geometry you can then delete hidden again and end up with the teeth alone. do the inverse again on the original model to keep the model without the teeth aswell. To be sure you get to keep the original model in your tools each time, make clones of it , before doing anything destructive.

You can also paint a model in different colors and then have those colors determine where to apply polygroups on your model, but I can’t explain how to do that without zbrush in front of me, don’t have it here at the moment.
