Insufficient Memory

Hey everyone, I’ve been messing with the preferences within zBrush to get it running faster, but for some reason I still receive Insufficient Memory errors at strange times. i.e. I just received one what I tried to import a 1.3 mil poly model.

My comp is a 3.4 P4 with 4GB of RAM and a 256MB 6800 GT video card.

My Undos are set to 1, Compact Mem is at 2k. I ran the test for Multithreading (which is suggested) so I turned on Multidraw and MultiRender, and the display is set to Fast Renderer.

As far as I know, I have changed almost all of the appropriate settings to get this running better, but yet I still receive errors. Does anyone else have this issue or know how to resolve it?

Thanks in advance!

so I was talkin to a buddy of mine that works at Blur, and he said that zBrush has an issue with computers that have over 2GB in RAM, and that everyone at Blur as to pull out memory in order to get zBrush working well.

Anyone know anything else about this?

i used to have just 1 gig of ram, but then i was having that same problem you are having. so i bought another gig of ram. it runs smoother and allows me to work on high res models, but i still come across that same problem with 2 million poly models. i hope someone has the answers.

denni5, have you gone to the Performance Tips thread here in ZBC’s FAQ>General section?

no i haven’t done that yet. thanks Aurick, i’ll do that right now. but i have changed the compact memory setting, the max poly per mesh setting, and the multi processor setting. but i’m still having the insuffient memory issue.

thanks for your help in advance Aurick

hey Aurick, i checked that thread you suggested. all the recommended settings are at default except for Compact Memory (which i have played around with a buch of different settings), MaxPolyMesh is at 4( also played with different settings), and Multi Draw is on. now i did see a change when i installed the additional gig of ram(now 2 gigs) but i’m just wondering if i should be having insuffient memory problems when working with 2.5 million poly models.
p.s. thanks for the speedy reply of my first post. you guys are awsome:)

When you have more than 2GB Ram you must set the /3GB switch in the boot.ini or you will not be able to take full advantage of your memory.
For details search for ‘/3GB’ on the microsoft site. If you do not set it you might end up with 1-1.5 GB of memory for your applications and 2GB for XP…

Greetings from the Microsofts rocket scientists:rolleyes:…

Lemo

hey Lemo, so now what if i only have 2gigs total? i don’t need to bother with that right?

Hey Aurick and if anybody else is having this problem,
i have 2 gigs of ram, so i have my Compact Memory to 1750, i have my Max Poly Per Mesh at 4, and Multi Draw on. my problem with insuffient memory messages coming up after moving between subdivisions is gone. i have just been giving the computer a couple seconds in between jumping from one sub d to the next. before if i wanted to go from sub d 1 to sub d 6 i would just push the d key five times with no pause in between. now i give my computer a few seconds in between. i hope thats the last i see of those insuffient memory messages. i’ll keep you posted. thanks so much for the help Aurick and Lemo. i’m sure i’ll have many more questions to come.:+1:

Oh boy, we’re in trouble now…

And yes, with 2GB it’s behaving alright by default.

Cheers
Lemo

hehe yeah like me lemo
oke this is my question me and my bud ar making a model out of the same base mesh right
he has 1 gig of ram and i have 2
but we both cant devide no more on sub 6 we both cant get past the 2,8 mil pollys

subdivide would make 5,6 poly’s so you would need to set max to 6 million poly’s max poly per mesh in preferences…

beware though… with me it works ok but you will get inssuficient memory messages even when your memory is not full… also it tends to crash at the most horrible moments just before saving very randomly

Memory is always a grey thing to talk about. If you have 2GB and run some other apps as well then you might have less chance to work with high poly’s as your buddy with 1GB. However, the best indicator is the task manager. And it is also important to have consecutive memory blocks. Unfortunately a parameter where you do not have controll over. You can have different results with a machine already being worked with for a while or a freshly booted one. Also the resolution of the canvas playes a GREAT role. In the end, more memory is always better than less memory 8-). More can’t be said without further details. ZBrush has a great memory management build in, otherwise it would not be able to do what it does.
