Insert multi-mesh repeatedly

As a new user I have been trying to follow along the IMM tutorial by Tate Mosesian:
http://pixologic.com/zclassroom/homeroom/lesson/environments-with-tate-mosesian/

It would be nice if I could lay down a row of (random) bricks in one swoop instead of Ctrl-Clicking each one individually. Is there a way to do this, similar to how the Tri-IMM brushes extend along the curve ?

See ‘variations’
http://docs.pixologic.com/reference-guide/brush/modifiers/

I set the variations to a large number, variations selector to 3 and also had to enable the little slider next to MultiMesh Select. This is what allowed me to place individual instances (one brick per ctrl-click). My question is this: how can I place a line/curve of brick instances without having to place them one-by-one ?
