I was wondering if it’s possible increasing the number of polygons in a specific area, like the face of my character or other places that would require more detail than say, the torso.

Yes, Yes, Yes, ZRemesher using Polypaint is but one method possible. Visible areas can be subdivided when other parts of the mesh are hidden. There is HighRes Geometry. Don’t overlook polygroups and masking. Subdivision levels make sense
Mask the area you want to increase, reverse the mask and subdivide it.
