In need of a new web hosting service

So I have been with Fasthosts for a number of years, and although they are reliable, they are not cheap and are limited on space allocation.

So I need a new hosting service.

The holy grail for me is this:

reliable
PHP ready
ASP and ASP.Net ready
My SQL included (MS SQL not essential)
at least 5 gig of space
did I say reliable
with good customer service.

Please do not recommend IXWebhosting or Fasthosts.

IXWebhosting has trouble with their PHP email and it caused me no end of hassle.

dustin I have been through hell with hosts, but I finally found one that really is the best deal.

It also supports tons of free apps and directory browsing.

http://www.bluehost.com/

NEVER NEVER go with like godaddy there servers are packed! and your site will crawl.!

www.houseoftutorials.net is now hosted by bluehost;)

Yeah this looked like a good company when I looked at before, trouble is they don’t seem to have ASP hosting, and I have an entire site that is coded in ASP. I don’t see it on their site.

I REALLY would rather not have to recode the whole thing in PHP.

asp is a huge memory pig

As long as you dont have high traffic
www.page1hosting.com has ASP
they are pretty fast Just dont stream video through them via millions of peeps and you will be ok;)

I had a micrsoft server with my site on it. I will never go back again. it was very limited and slow. And ASP does not work on Linux.

Whats the application ?
Shopping cart or something ?

Blue host has this live chat feature on their front page just type in the asp question and within secs they will answer it live;)

no, it’s a dynamic photo album.

There are folders on the web server where my family put photos (added through ftp). They create a new folder for an album in their ftp area and the site will auto update and dynamically create links and pages depending on where you navigate. Took me ages to do and now even uses a flash slide show to show your current album.

EDIT:
To be honest I am rethinking this through, and if I can find a way I may recode it. It’s just going to take a while

EDIT 2:
Oh and I spoke to their live chat, very impressive. They said no ASP and no plans. Linux all the way and rightly so. I just wish I had stuck with PHP.

this is what I use for that same thing

http://gallery.menalto.com/

all you do is upload the photos to a directory ftp

goto the mass add button and it will auto thumbnail all the photos and place them within gallerys.

Also gives you a dynamic resolution switch where if you upload a 2048 by 2048 it will make 3 seperate resolutions for the same picture.
A high, med and low that the browser can choose with a drop down switch.

O and blue host will auto install it for you;) if your no good at php.

I can get around very well in php but it is nice to just sit back and let them make all the databases and installs;)

WOW! Ok you convinced me!

They have a money back thingy, so I can’t loose I guess. Thanks again buddy! now get back to those Blender vids!

Your sig needs them adding by the way.

Thanks again!

You know what…

I’m reading some pretty harsh reviews of Bluehost.

Are you sure the’re that good? These people seem to really have issues with speed and bad support.

NOTE: Read the user comments on this:

intresting dustin
I like them, but of course Now I havent ticked them off by streaming any video through them. Which is usually the one thing those greedy hosting companys hate. And is usually what makes me decide whether they are a bunch of corporate tools that have no clue.

I would say i have not had any issues with them so far. And the server is faster than most I have dealt with.

So I guess since I’m not doing anything iffy and stay below the nerdar I’ll be ok;)

do you use php email sending? If so have you found they are reliable with it?

Reason I ask is that IXWebhosting was awful for that.

Ahhhhh! as I said before, money back promise, so no reason not to try them out.

ya php mail works great in my moodle site at .net

Alright, I’ll give it a go.

Thanks for the advice.

I just wanted to say, thanks for the recomendation! the move to Bluehost was painless and I have tested PHP mail, ftp transfers, image transfer and various other tests and it all works wonderfully! and VERY quick too!

So thanks mushroom dude!

After being kicked to the curve a few times. i found out quick whats a good host;)

glad you like it;)

I think the people that wrote those reviews really havent been kicked enough. to know what bad is.

Yes, I use Bluehost for my site, it works great too!

If you fax in a copy of your Drivers License, you can get SSH/Shell access to your account as well.

Really! Cool! i have no idea what that is, but I’ll check it out!
