Importing own mesh and making symmetry work

I imported my own mesh to replace the default mesh. I noticed it came in off center from world center. Symmetry was not working.

How do I setup symmetry when importing own mesh to start a new project with?

Thanks in advance.

If you want to keep your model in its off-center position then simply turn on Local Symmetry in the Transform palette. Symmetry will then work on the model.

If you want to move the model to the worldspace center you can use the Gizmo:

  1. Make sure Symmetry is off in the Transform palette.
  2. Turn on Move mode or press W on the keyboard. This will show the Gizmo.
  3. Click the little thumbtack icon at the top of the Gizmo. This is to move the Gizmo to the Unmasked Center. Provided there is no masking on your model, this will place the Gizmo at the center of your model.
  4. Click the little house icon at the top of the Gizmo. This will move the Mesh to Axis - it will center your mesh.

If Symmetry still doesn’t work properly because your mesh is not fully symmetrical then you have one more option: the Tool>Geometry>Modify Topology>Mirror And Weld button. This will copy one side of the model (the left side when the model is facing you) and mirror it to the other side, welding the result, so it will have perfect symmetry. You can change the axis by clicking on the little X, Y or Z in the button.
