Importing a base model issues

I don’t yet know how to make precision dimensioned parts in zbrush like I can with standard cad software

I wanted to import a base to detail but it doesn’t output in obj

so I used mesh convert .com and changed the stl to a obj

once inside zbrush I go to divide and increase the polycount and it breaks into tons a pieces, unuseable

how can I import a base obj that doesn’t break up like that?

Look under: Geometry > Modify Topology

… and click WeldPoints

You can also set the weld option in the Import panel before you import your .obj.

I imported and welded the points, didn’t blow up but it made a sketchy chattery surface when I divided

wheres that panel located, all I can find is a import button

It’s in the Tool palette.

You can also import STL files through 3D Print Exporter plugin. It also has a weld points threshold slider in the advanced options.

Using the Creasing options (found in the Geometry palette) on the object after import should also help stop it breaking up when subdividing.

alright fellas thanks ill give this another shot tonight!

OK so I got It in, divided and didn’t explode but even at 4 million poly count the stroke looks horrid, why?

Without seeing the wires, I would say the distribution of polys is uneven, ie not enough of them where you laid the strokes. Duplicate the object and run Dynamesh on it and see if that improves things.

yes the polys were very stretched and way outta wack, zremesher fixed it up nice and neat

thanks for the help on this to everyone
