Imported STL's are always dark but imported OBJ's look normal, why?

Hello,

Does anyone know why when I import the same model as an STL and an OBJ… the STL version looks very dark almost as if it’s masked. Changing materials does not get rid of the dark shade it has. The imported OBJ version looks normal, (exactly displays all the materials correctly).

What is going on there that I don’t understand?

Thanks.

Does the STL have polypaint turned on?

Hmmm,

Thanks for the idea/question but it’s just a basic ring I made in Rhino and exported as STL. I never add texture or colors to my models since as a hobby, I just design to 3d print and then cast in metal.

It’s weird, it’s like a very dark color like it’s masked and it’s the same issue even if you change materials in Zbrush. But when I export the same model as an obj, it comes in normal.

I wonder if something is happening different when we “import” OBJ’s it’s a completely different command or button from the tool/subtool panel.

They made the “Import STL” through “3d Print” Plugin at a different time so they are different actions. It must have to do with this.

I think beta_channel want to ask you does the subtool (STL) have polypaint turned on.
Turn it off and you will get rid of dark color.

And there is option “skip color” on Import Opt. for stl files so…

That dark color is face or poly color of stl mesh, in most cases gray or black (not colored) and zbrush represent it thru polypaint.

OBJ’s are imported without color, so…

Oh, I see. I misunderstood and it sounds you are correct. I’ll confirm and thank you .
