Import mesh problem

I have a z brush scene with about 100 subtools in it. I want to import 4 extra meshes from Maya into the zbrush scene. I’ve tried FBXImporter from ZPlugin, Plain old Import… every time it brings in the model fine but deletes everything else. Why? I’ve tried selecting the Add button so it adds to my current scene. It never does.

When you insert new Subtool, it only lets you add a primitive

any ideas?

Hello @Calvaria

The procedure for adding subtools to an existing tool would be to import them with either no 3d tool selected, or the default zbrush poly star selected, and then append or insert them to your target tool as a new subtool via the subtool menu. The imported mesh should appear in the main tool menu, and you can select it via the Append or Insert function.

If you have a 3d subtool selected and you use the import function, by default the imported mesh will replace the active subtool. If “Add” is enabled in the Tool > Import menu, the geometry will be merged (but not welded) into the active subtool with whatever other geometry is there. You would then have to use one of the Split functions in the subtool menu to split it into a separate subtool.

If this is not your experience, please document what is happening on your end with un-cropped screenshots of your interface during the process so we can look for issues.

Thanks!

Thank you Spyndel, this works. As I’m sure you’ve worked out I’m new to Zbrush. It doesn’t help that the project I’m working on is quite complicated. It’s an anatomical model of the head.

I wonder why in my ‘main tools’ window, the project’s main model (head including all anatomy) shows up as whatever single piece of anatomy I have selected. If I select it, the whole head loads up. picture attached… the only reason I can tell it apart is the number 845 in the top corner (there are 845 anatomical parts).

I wonder why this is and could I rename this Main ‘Tool’ as something else?
