Import/Export Zbrush Universal Camera to Blender

In ZBrush 2019 a new universal 3D camera was introduced to ZBrush. In theory the camera can now be imported/exported from/to other 3D applications through the FBX Export-Import plugin and they will match perfectly.

I have tried with both Blender 2.79 and Blender 2.80 with no success. The camera imports or exports but it seems to be pointing to the wrong position. I have tried playing with the axis with no succes either.

Has anyone tried it and being able to make it work with Blender? This could be a really good feature to make advanced compositions with both Zbrush and Blender renders at the same time.

Thanks a lot,

Hi,
I’ve just spent all night and early morning trying to understand what’s wrong, but it seems Blender/FBX <–> other softwars has some troubles.
It seems to me only Blender has this problem with ZBrush, just imported Blender camera fbx in Maya and it works, instead seems ZBrush doesn’t like something in Blender fbx file.
Last try I did was Blender 2.79b with 6.0 ascii file option and the camera was there, even if it was shifted a bit.
I will investigate more as I need Blender <–> ZBrush working with no problem.
I’ll let you know if something good will come out.
If you have other news, please share.
Thank you a lot.

Hi,

Is there maybe any progress regarding this issue? I just discovered the same problem.

Thanks!

Metinseven,
really sorry if I’m writing you only now.
To make it short, after many tries and hitting wall, I raised white flag and I left the Blender camera to ZBrush workflow for later.
As you read, I was using Blender 2.79b, maybe 2.8 could have a better exporter…?
But if you wrote me 16 days ago, I’m pretty sure you’re already using 2.8, isn’t?
Anyway, I’ll try it again, dunno when, but I’m sure one day I’ll need a working workflow about exporting cameras, so better to work in advance.
Or asking Mr. Pixo and devs team to give it a look
Sorry again for the delay, hoping you’re fine.
Ciao

Thanks for your reply!

I’m using Blender 2.83 (actually even the latest 2.9 alpha builds).

It’d be great if this could be fixed, but I don’t know if it’s the ZBrush FBX exporter or the Blender importer that causes the issue.

Hi guys,

I ran into the same issue while working on a project today but found a very crude workaround. I saved an FBX with a camera from Zbrush and without going straight to blender I first imported it in Keyshot (without using the Bridge) and as expected the camera views and view port dimensions matched perfectly.
Then I used Keyshot to export out a 2nd FBX of the same model and camera and imported it in Blender (2.83) and it worked almost okay with one small shift. I had to change the camera size in Blender from about 27 to 15 and the views matched perfectly. I only tested it the one time so could not test if the camera size change fix situation was a consistent element or if so whether changing the size to 15 would be a universal solution.
I’ll test some more and let you guys know how things turn out. Do let me know if you guys manage to crack the case.

Hope this helps for now.

Cheers!!!

Nope, the plugin to import a cam is still very much broken

So good so far it seems to not be working still, any Zbrush devs care to shed some light on this issue?

The best thing to do is to submit an issue via the Pixologic Support site.

Might as well try it, thanks

Has anyone ever reported this to Pixologic?

I can’t remember if I did, but to make sure you can submit it. It will only prioritize the issue if multiple submissions arrive.

I opened the request through Conversation ID 228515

Unfortunately, I still haven’t received a response from the Pixologic team. I don’t understand why, before Maxon the response was quick.
