This will happen if you use the mesh visibility functions at any point while the curve stroke is still live. If you intentionally or unintentionally Shift+ Ctrl click on any part of the mesh to hide it , it will commit the stroke geometry. When the mesh is unhidden, that stroke geometry will be duplicated on the mesh but not yet masked.
If you use Subtool> Split Unmasked at this point, you can easily split off the duplicate geometry into another subtool while preserving your live curve. Or you can simply Ctrl-Z back to before the mesh was hidden.
